  10. BETHESDA, Maryland -- April 5, 1993 -- Qualitas announced today version
  11. 7 of 386MAX, their best selling memory manager.  The new version
  12. provides additional benefits to DOS and Windows users and includes
  13. special support for MS-DOS 6.
  14.  
  15. In response to the market evolution towards Microsoft Windows, the
  16. company has enhanced 386MAX to provide unique, new Windows oriented
  17. benefits.  DOSMAX (TM) for Windows and WinSmart (TM) technology provide
  18. 386max users with up to 100K more DOS conventional memory under Windows
  19. than is available in a native DOS environment.

  21. DOSMAX addresses the popularity of using DOS character-based
  22. applications in Windows DOS sessions.  386MAX provides DOS text
  23. applications with up to 736K DOS conventional memory in a DOS window by
  24. using memory that would otherwise be reserved for graphics
  25. applications.  WinSmart intelligently allocates high DOS regions to
  26. Windows when Windows starts.  Unlike DOS 6, which allocates 24K of high
  27. DOS address space for Windows overhead (reducing the available memory
  28. for resident software), 386MAX allocates the space at Windows start-up,
  29. after resident software loads high.

  31. 386MAX further facilitates optimization of DOS under Windows.  New to
  32. version 7 is an innovative program information file (PIF) editor for
  33. Windows.  The Qualitas PIF Editor is more intuitive than its DOS
  34. counterpart, providing a clearer layout and perpetual context-sensitive
  35. help.  "Most users don't know when to change settings for 'time slicing'
  36. or 'locking memory.' The result is that most people run DOS in Windows
  37. inefficiently," explains Paul Tarlow, 386MAX Product Manager.  "The
  38. Qualitas PIF editor leads the user from field to field, explaining each
  39. one.  This is the best way to get the best DOS."

  41. "There is no doubt of a market transition from DOS to Windows," says
  42. Mary Stanley, Qualitas CEO.  "The key fact is that most of the market
  43. has a foot in each world.  There are more people running DOS and Windows
  44. applications side-by-side than there are users living exclusively in one
  45. environment.  That is why DOS under Windows is so important and why
  46. Qualitas believes that providing the ultimate DOS platform from within
  47. Windows is the best solution."

  49. As with previous versions, 386MAX 7 includes new features and
  50. enhancements for the DOS user.  Unlike DOS 6's MemMaker, 386MAX 7 fully
  51. supports DOS 6 MultiConfig start-up files.  "DOS 6 provides MemMaker to
  52. help users optimize their systems and MultiConfig to provide quick
  53. access to multiple, and presumably optimal, configurations" says Tarlow.
  54. "Users are going to be frustrated to learn that the two features simply
  55. don't work together."

  57. New ExtraDOS (TM) loads additional DOS overhead, including FILES,
  58. BUFFERS and COMMAND.COM, into high DOS memory for as much as a 20K or
  59. more low DOS memory gain.  As with all recovered DOS conventional
  60. memory, the additional space is also available to DOS sessions under
  61. Windows.  Stack Overflow Protection (SOP) protects users from poorly
  62. behaved resident software that would otherwise cause system instability
  63. or failure.  386MAX now also provides enhanced support for drive
  64. swapping that occurs in system that use Stacker and SuperStor drive
  65. compression programs.

  67. The new Qualitas Memory Tester (QMT) provides advanced RAM analysis and
  68. testing.  Defective and unstable RAM is one of the most common causes of
  69. system instability.  QMT performs six different advanced tests aimed at
  70. identifying the specific ways in which RAM can fail and can operate
  71. without a memory manager active in the system.  QMT can run from
  72. AUTOEXEC.BAT or from any batch file for automated testing and system
  73. burn-in.

  75. With version 7, 386MAX becomes the first DPMI 1.0 host.  DPMI support is
  76. also improved to provide virtual memory to any DPMI-compliant
  77. application.  386MAX was the first memory manager to provide DPMI 0.9
  78. support and remains the only memory manager with integrated DPMI.

  80. 386MAX 7 is scheduled to ship in June, 1993.  BlueMAX 7, an upgrade to
  81. Qualitas's PS/2 specific memory manager, will be released at the same
  82. time and with the same enhancements as 386MAX.

  84. The suggested retail prices for 386MAX 7 and BlueMAX 7 remain $99.95 and
  85. $124.95 respectively.  Users may upgrade to either product for $29.95.
  86. Customers who purchase 386MAX or BlueMAX after March 22, 1993 and who
  87. register their software may receive a free upgrade ($6.95 shipping and
  88. handling.)
